The Towata Gallery began in Alton, Illinois in 1964 and is owned by Arthur Towata. It is an elegant showcase of his work. Although best know for his ceramics and watercolors, Arthur is also proficient working in oil, acrylic, woodcut prints and sculpture. The work, steeped in traditional form, reflects traces of his Japanese heritage. The body of work created by Towata is diverse. His functional work bears his signature “Dragonfly”. Jars, Vases, and Vessel forms are expertly thrown, designed with slips and other unique techniques of mark making. All of his works bear his individual identity as a contemporary artist and is featured on this site individually pictured within featured categories.
The gallery also exhibits art works by his partner, Kate Morgan, also a ceramic artist. Kate’s sculptural work is organic. The forms are delicate and fragile objects reflecting her love for nature. She also creates whimsical functional work based on her exploration of Italian Majolica Wares. Kate leads groups to Italy each summer to enjoy the culture, art and landscape. The Gallery serves as a gateway for Kate’s travel planning services, workshops and educational opportunities abroad.
Towata Fine Art Gallery also exhibits artwork from other selected Midwestern Artists. It is a featured site of the Annual “Art East Tour” each October exhibiting the work of Towata’s Independent Study Group along with other invited artists in the local area.
